SCOOP - Serpent Spyder Buggy 2wd 1/10

61 posts in this topic

Recently David Hassel from Sweden joined team Serpent . David is a very skilled and talented young driver, who can race both onroad and offroad very well, but his main interest is for 1/8 offroad racing and winning !

Coming from Kyosho before, he races Serpent Cobra GP buggy since late august . His 1st race appearance with Cobra Buggy at the Nordics in Norway went really well, winning the semi-final and finished 7th overall, with speed good enough to be on the podium. 2 weeks ago he joined the Swedish Cup for 1/10 gas onroad and finished 3rd with a borrowed 733. Winter will be good for running indoor 1/8 and 1/10 offroad and also some indoor carpet racing with 411 is planned.

As soon as Serpents next bigger project the 2wd 1/10 buggy will be ready, he will test and race that as well.

I really do not have permission to let people take pictures of the prototype. However, I can not stop anyone from shooting a video while I am running the car on the track. Typically if someone wants to look at the car, I do not have a problem showing them.

I have run a few other cars now and have many more to run. The car itself has been tested at a few different tracks and continually being improved. I have been out of 1.10 racing for about 8 years so the learning curve seems quite steep.

I think anyone that has watched the car go, would agree it actually is going around quite well. The car overall still needs a more refined setup, but again, needs more track testing. Each week, we go faster and faster, which is quite rewarding.

Yesterday we ran at Holeshot, which is indoor high bite, this sunday I will run it outdoors on a more loose track.

So far, things are very promising.. I think when the car is for sale to the customers, they will be very happy.

To answer the questions about wheel offset and so on....

The rear wheels will be the same as : 22,RB-5,AE B4.2 and will fit any other brand of wheel that uses the same offset and 12mm hex. You can also remove the hex and use any of your older existing pin drive wheels that use the same offset as .. XXX(bk-1,2), AE b4(4.1) and also the Yokomo B-max rear wheel.

The front wheels on the other hand are not the same as any car out there. They are also 12mm hex drive, but the offset is specific to the car. Based on the Steering spindle, offset and so on, it was not possible to use an existing wheel to make it fit.

The good news is, you rarely replace your front tires. Whereas you replace the rears probably 6-8 times as often as the fronts.

Hope that answers any questions regarding the wheels.

Serpent developer and racer Billy Easton is intensively testing the new Serpent Spyder 2wd 1/10 Buggy , which is in its final stages of development. Performance, reliability and durability of this rear motor project are very close to Eastons liking now. The Spyder will be released in early july and will show at the 2013 World Championships in the USA.

In the meantime Billy is also developing the mid motor version, which will share many parts with the rear motor version, and a SCT 2wd is also planned, both for later in 2013 bu intime for the new indoor (carpet) season.

Below Billy’s race report of a very well attended Florida race.

Lead Finger Anniversary Race

Space Coast R/C

This past weekend was the First Annual LFR race at Space Coast R/C in Cocoa Beach,FL. The facility is the largest Indoor track in the state of Florida. They use Red Clay and prep it with grape soda and sugar. The traction is pretty intense and the layouts are always a blast. Angel and his crew did a great job keeping the track up and the race program going. They have an onsite chef to cook all different types of food and keep the racers from starving all day. There were around 200 Entries for the event and 21 or so heats. It was a typical IFMAR qualification format with 2 quals and a single A-Main. There were a fair amount of sponsored drivers in attendance, Paul Wynn, Ryan Eckert, Daimon Birkowicz, Jeremy Harris, Jadar Lopez and a few others.

This track has been the home of a lot of the testing and development of the Serpent Spyder SRX-2. I have several race days at this track to develop the car for durability and also performance. This was the largest race I have entered thus far.

Qualification:

As qualification set off, my first round was going well until my tires went away about 3 minutes in. The car became difficult to drive and I began making to many mistakes. That round, the top finisher was Paul Wynn with his AE B4.2. He drove a smooth 5 minute qualifier with minimal troubles.

The second round came around and I opted for a longer lasting tire (harder compound) and my car was on point for a fast time. Although the track was a little dusty I posted a good time and was able to take overall TQ for the event.

It was nice to be on Pole, as the car was working well and it never hurts to have a good outing with such a new car.

Main:

After waiting what seemed to be all day, finally our main was up. I changed up the setup for the final to something I thought would be more drivable for the final. We were very lucky to have the track blown off just before our final. This gave us a premium track for the 5 minute final. At the sound of the horn, my car felt really good. It was stable and fairly easy to drive. The changes numbed out the front end and although it was a little slower in the corners you could run lap after lap with no troubles. I was able to pull away from the tone and steadily put a gap between me and second place.

The finishing order was Myself, Paul Wynn,Damon Birkowicz,Ryan Eckert and Andy Darby.

Thanks to all my sponsors for the great products and support. Serpent, Proline, A-main Hobbies, Hi-tec , Protec, Reedy, LRP,PT Racing Oils, Arrowmax.

I also want to give a shout out to.. RC Racing Action Shots photography. They did an awesome job covering the photos of the event.

Sincerely,

Billy Easton
