Posted November 2, 2009 TOP Racing’s Photon touring car concept was introduced some time ago with the help of some very nice CAD images. Now the 1/10 scale electric touring car is finally available to everybody and we are happy to get our hands on the tasty looking Foam Carpet edition. The car is designed by US on-road wizard Josh Cyrul and features some very nice details such as easy-access front and rear differentials, a specially designed LiPo battery retaining system and other gimmicks that make the Photon stand out from the rest of the current crop of electric touring cars. More... Performance Tips Differentials We left the thin 12×0.3 mm shims on the outdrives off as to achieve a small amount of axial play between the differential outdrives and the bearings (Step 05). Also the triangle shaped slots in the differential gear hold extra ball grease. This is a nice idea and seems to work but we advise not to use too much grease as otherwise things can become a bit messy. After our first run the rear differential felt a bit gritty. Maybe it slipped a bit under acceleration. We disassembled it, polished the diff rings with WD40 and very fine grit wet & dry paper and reassembled it. After this treatment the differential felt smooth and consistent for the rest of the day. Quantum Mechanics - TOP Racing Photon Centre drive When gluing the centre drive pulleys and the outer flanges together we first pressed the outer rings onto the pulleys and applied tiny drops of CA glue after that. You can dose the amount of glue easily by applying a small drop on the tip of a scalpel and let it drip into the gap. (Step 06) Pinion gear The grub screw of the pinion gear is a bit hard to reach. Best thing is to use a good quality ball hex driver or a short standard hex that is placed between the top deck and the spur gear with the driver angled to the back of the car. Top deck/motor screws Install the upper of the two motor screws before fixing the top deck. We found it quite hard to insert the screw as the button head touches the top deck making it nearly impossible to put the motor screw where it belongs. If you already installed the upper deck remove the four 2.5×6 mm countersunk screws located over the layshaft and raise the top deck slightly so the button head motor screw can slide underneath it. Steering servo Two different steering servo brackets are supplied with the Photon kit. We suggest to use the larger ones They make the servo stand away from the centre line of the chassis a bit more but otherwise the steering lever of the central steering crank will hit the servo. We additionally suggest to make use of the rearmost location holes for the servo as otherwise the steering lever will hit the servo mounting lugs. Posted November 22, 2009 I’m now running the latest car from the TOP stable, the Photon. In time-honoured fashion I will run through the build with a few badly-lit pics and tips that you may or may not find useful. Overall impressions Building the Asphalt Rubber Pro version of the car, I was very impressed by the quality of the parts, a clear step up from its forerunner, the Scythe. The drivetrain in particular is outstandingly smooth. Mouldings are very precise; press fit where they need to be; free running where they need to be. With two exceptions, no fettling is required to build a car that works as it should. So despite there being a lot of screws and a lot of components, the quality means it goes together very easily. The two disappointments are the spur gear adaptor and the shock pistons. More on these later. General build tips apply as they would to all model cars. Use quality hand tools, tighten parts evenly, use a little threadlock on metal-to-metal fixings, and lubricate accordingly. This car uses a lot of M3 set screws and some M2.5 screws which need a quality 1.5mm driver. I chose TOP’s own driver (#PT-021025). The car is quite unusual in that it comes with no lubricants, fluids or tools, so a well equipped pit box is an asset! Posted April 21, 2010 C'est un kit de conversion par CEFX pour photon, Donc OUI, il faut partir d'une photon . J'aime bien le look du carbone, ça change. Je sais pas ce que ça vaut en dynamique mais le tressage fin est joli. On parie que le mot "isotropique" arrivera assez vite dans la discussion ;-) ? Voir ce qu'en dit J.Cyrul sur rctech. Posted June 13, 2010 Montage et essai de la TOP Photon avec kit CEFX "Evolution" par heretic Introduction. Fruit de l'imagination de Josh Cyrul, la TOP photon reste plutôt discrète sur le vieux continent depuis sa sortie. L'apparition de ce kit de conversion "Evolution", également conçu par Cyrul mais commercialisé sous sa marque CEFX, est donc une occasion de faire d'un pierre deux coups en proposant un montage de la voiture convertie en "Evolution" dès son sortir de la boîte, donc sans passer par l'étape "Photon classique". La TOP Photon "classique" ne manque pas d'arguments ni d'originalité pour séduire. On reste pantois, voire amusé par le soin apporté aux détails sur cette auto; pour s'en convaincre il suffit de lire la brochure TOP à cette page. D'emblée on repère de très bons points: les supports d'amortisseurs solidaires des cellules pour un accès éclair aux différentiels; le renvoi de direction qui permet de jouer très finement sur le braquage différentiel grâce à différents inserts, sans influer sur d'autres paramètres tels que le bras de levier du renvoi; un spool tout plastoc, etc. La liste est longue et la documentation TOP exhaustive. en savoir plus Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
